Ask questions. Get as many details about the new home as you can. Learn about their experience with previous animals, if there will be any other pets in the home and if they will keep it inside or allow it outdoors. In addition, you can ask if you can do a home visit prior to bringing her over.
- You should feel comfortable with who you’re choosing to give your cat to. Make sure the person is ready to take on the responsibility of a cat. Do they have a good vet set up that they can visit?
Invite them to come meet her. If they seem like good candidates and you feel comfortable doing so, invite them to come meet her. Make sure you have someone you trust over when they come for the visit.
Provide the new owner with what they need. Once you choose a new owner, make sure you provide them with the goods and information they need. Supply them with your pet’s toys, bed, food and treats. It’s best to keep as much as you can as regular for your pet during this transition. Give the person Lady’s medical history in paper form, and provide information such as her favorite games, her preferred food (if you’re not handing it over), what odd behaviors she has, and the treats she likes best.
- Write up a document that shows you transferred ownership of the pet. A simple written dated signed sheet saying you transferred ownership from you to another person would be sufficient.
Say goodbye to Lady. Your cat has likely grown very attached to you, and you should do your best to help her transition to her new home. See if you would be able to spend some time with her in her new home so she can adjust. Or alternatively, it may be helpful to leave an item of your clothing that smells like you, so she will have something familiar in her new surroundings
