When you fast (for 4-7 days, as found in human clinical trials), the lack of processing food limits what is called M-TOR activation. M-TOR is a growth factor. By limiting the growth factor and dampening M-TOR activation you are able to signal cellular macro-autophagy or cellular death.
Now autophagy is very important
The word “autophagy” derives from the latin words Automous and phagy, which literally means “self-eating”.
And that is what is happening. When you dampen M-TOR activation your body is able to rid itself of cells that are weakened, aging, or have damaged cellular components – which are referred to as “senescent” cells.
Senescence is basically over time your cells stop proliferating because they are damaged (which is a good thing and stops you from having cancer).
So fasting for 4-7 days dampens M-TOR activation and signals autophagy to target only your senescent cells.
Rephrased, this means following such a length of fasting can cause weak cells you no longer use to be recycled.
Autophagy is also directly correlated to biosynthesis. So when a cell dies, it automatically creates a new cell to replace it.
And this whole process works both on macro or micro levels.
